Stitchalong- Fly Stitch Update

We’re a week into our stitchalong! I’m having a blast chatting with you guys on Instagram! Here’s a few pics of what I’ve been up to:

On the left you can see I’ve done the leaves with a Fishbone stitch, which I’ll post a tutorial for below. The leaves are done primarily in 907 but I’ve added a couple of stitches of 563 to one side. If you look closely you can see that I’ve blended the threads for the middle stem with one thread of 907 and one thread of 563. I love the aqua/underwatery feel it gives that stem!

The Fishbone stitch is another favorite of mine – I tend to lean towards stitches that provide texture. Here’s a quick tutorial on how to do it:

Another close up showing you how I’ve done the one stem that isn’t made with the fly stitch. I stitched it with 563 but added a whip stitch with 702. The flowers are done with 761 for the outer petals and 961 for the inner petals.

Something I’ve learned over the years is that my stitching doesn’t always go to plan. I usually have an idea in mind when I make a pattern, but there are definitely times when I don’t or times that those ideas change as I begin the actual stitching. For that flower above I had no idea what I might do with just those straight lines. I love how it turned out!

Week 1 progress

It looks almost finished, doesn’t it? That was down to over excitement about starting a stitchalong with everyone and the new year which is usually a slow time.

If you haven’t started yet, there is plenty of time to do so. Visit the main page for this stitchalong and get your free pattern. Please do remember to share your progress on Instagram with the hashtag #newleafstitchalong so we can see what you’re doing. Remember also, the above colors and stitches are only a guideline. Feel free to change it up!

In the meantime.. happy stitching!
