Welcome to our first Stitchalong of 2019!
Below you’ll find a floral image that features one of our favorite stitches – the Fly Stitch. I love the way the stitch lends itself to curves, and how it provides many places for little “flower buds” to sprout along the stem.
If you haven’t done the Fly stitch before you can find a quick tutorial at the bottom of the post. Let’s get started!
1 8″ x 8″ swatch of fabric
Size 9 embroidery needle
Embroidery hoop (I’ll be using a 7″ so the entire design is visible)
Embroidery floss in your choice of colors
Tips and Tricks:
- When tracing your design onto the fabric, it isn’t necessary to copy down the “V” shapes for the Fly stitch; they’re shown on the pattern as a guideline. I find that just having a line to follow allows for the spacing between the stitches to be what is natural for you.
- I’ll be using two threads throughout the design, but you should use whatever number of threads you’d like.
- Feel free to create new colorways by blending your threads.
Stitches I’ll be using in this design include:
- Back Stitch
- Fly Stitch
- French Knot
- Satin Stitch
- Fishbone Stitch
You should use whatever stitches you like – play with new ones or use old favorites!
Be sure to add pics of both your work in progress and your completed pieces on Instagram and tag #newleafstitchalong so we can all see what everyone is getting up to!
Most importantly, have fun!
